Telesco Wants People of Integrity in his Building

Las Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco is adamant about working with people of integrity.

Las Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco has many years of experience as an NFL executive under his belt.

Through that experience, he has prospered from working for successful organizations and great mentors, including one of the best general managers of all time, Bill Polian.

One of the more important qualities Telelsco has acquired from his years under Polian is his effort to fill his staff with people of integrity. Because just as the game being played on the gridiron is all about the team, those behind the scenes must also work as a team for their organization to achieve its goals.

Polian told our Hondo S. Carpenter on a recent episode of the "Las Vegas Raiders Insider" podcast that he learned that quality from Marv Levy.

"Coach Levy taught me that," Polian said. "You want people around you A: who are smart, B: who can make you smarter -- I know for a fact that I wasn't very smart, so I needed smart people around me; Coach Levy was plenty smart enough, but I'm not in that league, so that's one thing.

"Secondly, you want people who you trust. And again, I'll go back to Coach [Tony] Dungy here. Trust is the glue that holds us all together. If we trust one another because we can rely on their word, we can rely on what they tell us, we can rely on how they are going to act, we can rely on how they react with other people in the building, then, we can accomplish anything.

"Because if we trust one another, there's no issue. If you tell me this interview's going to last 'X' time, then fine; I know that you mean that. And if we extend it, that's great.

"But the bottom line is: I know that you mean that. And so, that's it in a nut shell. And in order for you to trust a coworker, they have to be honest, they have to be straightforward, they have to have a great work ethic, they have to care about the team. It's really that simple."

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
