Raiders' Robert Spillane Has Belief in Tyree Wilson

Las Vegas Raiders linebacker and captain Robert Spillane believes in defensive end Tyree Wilson's potential.

Las Vegas Raiders linebacker and captain Robert Spillane has more responsibility to the team than just fitting the run and covering the middle of the field.

As a veteran and a leader, Spillane must also be a voice for the team's young players. As a former young player trying to find his way in the league, he must offer his voice to those currently trying to do so.

One of those players on the Raiders is defensive end Tyree Wilson. The No. 7 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech, Wilson dealt with an unusual and unproductive rookie season in the Silver and Black.

Because of this, Wilson lost some confidence in his abilities. However, there were some impressive flashes late in the season in Wilson’s game. Spillane is one of the players who can help guide Wilson in the right direction.

He already has and spoke to the media on Monday about Wilson’s potential.

“Yeah, around this league –- I’ve heard it from many coaches –- the biggest jump in a player’s career is often from year one to year two,” Spillane said. “It’s because they get to see a full offseason; they get to see what the NFL is all about. They get to see how to take care of their bodies, how to prepare. So, we’re expecting to see a huge upswing from Tyree. I know he expects to see it in his game as well. And when you get a guy who’s very talented and eager and hungry to get out there and work, the only thing to do is go up from there.”

Spillane mentioned that players have a chance to have a full offseason between their first and second years. Wilson did not have an offseason in his rookie season as he was recovering from offseason foot surgery.

Now, Wilson is healthy and can go through his first full offseason, allowing him to refine his skills as a pass rusher. He has elite size and athleticism but needs to add a pass-rush move or two.

Wilson can show his true potential in his second season with Spillane and many other Raiders in his corner.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
