Raiders GM Tom Telesco on RB Alexander Mattison

The Las Vegas Raiders recently signed running back Alexander Mattison, who had a career year for the Minnesota Vikings last season.

The Las Vegas Raiders responded to former All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs’ departure by adding former Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison.

While Mattison was a starter for Minnesota for much of last season, that might not be his role with Las Vegas, but his presence certainly adds needed depth to the position group.

Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco discussed the Mattison’s addition when he joined the “2024 Raiders Free Agency Show.”

“He’s a pretty well-rounded player,” Telesco said. “I mean, he’s 220 pounds, he runs physical and hard, he runs [with] like a little bit of a violent style to him. The scheme that we’re going to run, he ran this very similar first couple years at Minnesota, so he has some familiarity with that.

“And he can catch the ball in the backfield, which you have to do; this is a passing league, got to be able to get out and catch the ball in space. He’s still a pretty good athlete, despite his size. And it’s going to be a committee of three or four backs; he’ll be one of those kind of competing for carries.

“But he’s always flashed there. The last team I was with [the Los Angeles Chargers], he had over 100 yards — all purpose yards. I think he had a good game against the Raiders as well last year.

“But he’s always been a really solid back, runs hard, runs tough.”

Mattison recorded 66 rushing yards in Week 14 last season when the Vikings defeated the Raiders, 3-0, at Allegiant Stadium.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
