Raiders GM Tom Telesco Talks Gardner Minshew Signing

The Las Vegas Raiders added the depth they needed in the quarterback room after releasing Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer.

By bringing in Gardner Minshew, the team has re-gained experience in its quarterback room and has ignited what should be an exciting position battle in training camp.

The best available free agent quarterbacks this offseason were not on the market for long, so Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco and his staff had to act fast to acquire Minshew.

Telesco discussed the process of adding Minshew when he joined the “2024 Raiders Free Agency Show.”

“You had to move quick, and I think part of it, too, if you looked at last year, like how many quarterbacks went down with injuries, and it kind of just reminds you you need more than one quarterback,” Telesco said. “You need at least two. And I think a lot of teams do the same thing as far as investing in this position, not just with your starters.

“So, a chance to add Gardner to the mix, have him come in to compete with Aidan [O’Connell] -- Gardner, whenever he’s had the chance to play, he’s going to produce. He plays with a certain moxie to him. I mean, he’s certainly got, when you watch him play, he just, to me, just screams ‘Raider’ as far as how he plays, how he plays the game, his passion for it.

"But we’re excited to add him in the room. I feel like he can help Aidan because Gardner’s been around a little bit, played in some different offenses, a little bit more of a veteran presence. So, we’re excited to have him.”

Minshew comes off one season as an Indianapolis Colt, having thrown for 3,305 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
