Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons To Hire Los Angeles Rams Coach Zac Robinson as Coordinator

The Los Angeles Rams lost defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to the Atlanta Falcons. The new head coach is bringing Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson with him.

The Los Angeles Rams became a victim of their own success when the coaching carousel jump-started the offseason.

Multiple assistants in Rams head coach Sean McVay’s staff interviewed for promotions, the only changes McVay anticipated. None were more notable than defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who the Atlanta Falcons hired to be their head coach on Thursday.

Losing an assistant coach to be a position coach elsewhere is one thing. Losing a well-respected mind to a head coaching position has an extensive list of downstream consequences. Morris will bring pieces of Los Angeles’ staff with him to Atlanta. That exodus began when Morris and the Falcons hired Rams quarterback coach Zac Robinson to be their new offensive coordinator. He had been a hot name early in the offseason.

Robinson had been with Los Angeles since 2019, where he was the assistant quarterbacks coach. He pivoted to assistant receivers coach for the next season before returning to his initial role in 2021 when the Rams won the Super Bowl.

After that season, Robinson was promoted to the quarterbacks coach and the pass-game coordinator. This was a pivotal step in joining the pipeline of McVay tree coaches to get bigger jobs around the league.

Robinson, a quarterback himself, played for the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Cincinnati Bengals during his four-year NFL career from 2010 to 2013.

Perhaps the most notable stop of Robinson’s football career was his work as a senior analyst at Pro Football Focus, which began in 2017. He hasn’t been shy about the knowledge he learned there impacting his coaching career that began two years later.

Robinson is a critical hire to Morris’ staff and will likely take many of the principles that made McVay’s offense successful with him. After Atlanta quarterback Desmond Ridder struggled this season, Robinson and Morris will work together to usher in a new quarterback, whether it be through free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft.
