Baltimore Orioles Owner Peter Angelos Dies at 94; Ravens' Steve Bisciotti Reacts

Just three days before his family's sale of his franchise was expected to be finalized, Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos passed away at the age of 94 on Saturday. Angelos bught the franchise in 1993 for just $173 million. In January, the family agreed to sell the Orioles to Baltimore native David Rubenstein for the reported price of $1.75 billion.

Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti shared his condolences on Saturday evening.

“I am saddened to learn about the passing of Peter Angelos. As a native Baltimorean, Peter was an important figure in our city’s rich sports history." Bisciotti said. "He was a smart businessman who wasn't afraid to stand up to issues he felt were important.

"Above all, the impact Peter made through his philanthropic efforts left a lasting impression on our community."

In 2018, Angelos turned control of the team over to his son, John. After years of court battles between his children and wife over the future of the organization, the family finally agreed to sell the team.

Angelos made his fortune as a Baltimore area attorney specializing in employee liability cases.

The Orioles issued a statement announcing Angelos' passing on Saturday. “Today, Peter G. Angelos passed away quietly at the age of 94,” the Orioles said in a statement. “Mr. Angelos had been ill for several years, and the family thanks the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who brought comfort to him in his final years."

Rubenstien offered sympaties as well.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the Angelos family on the passing of Peter Angelos," Rubenstein said in a statement released Saturday. "Peter made an indelible mark first in business and then in baseball. The city of Baltimore owes him a debt of gratitude for his stewardship of the Orioles across hree decades and for positioning the team for great success.”
