Ravens Ex-CB Anthony Averett Signs With 49ers

Cornerback Anthony Averett, a 2018 fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens, agreed to a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday

A former Baltimore Ravens draft pick has found himself a new home.

On Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers announced they had signed cornerback Anthony Averett, a fourth-round pick by Baltimore in 2018. This marks Averett's third team in three years as he tries to cement his place in the league.

In four years with the Ravens, Averett appeared in 57 games and started 27. The former fourth-round pick recorded 101 total tackles, 22 passes defended and three interceptions. While Averett didn't develop into a star, he did become a serviceable starter in his final season with the Ravens in 2021.

After leaving Baltimore last year, Averett spent one year with the Las Vegas Raiders. In that one season, he had 13 total tackles in seven games, but injuries derailed his season halfway through.

Averett played college football at Alabama, a school known for churning out star defensive backs. In 31 collegiate games, he tallied 98 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, 16 passes defended and an interception. He was a member of two national championship teams with the Crimson Tide, who won it all in 2015 and 2017.

As a fun fact, Averett is also the nephew of another former Raven. His uncle, Bryant McKinnie, appeared in 37 games and started 21 with the Ravens from 2011 and 2013. McKinnie also played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2002 to 2010 and finished his career with a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins in 2013.

Averett hasn't had the best showing in the NFL, but perhaps joining the 49ers' stingy defense could help him find his footing.
