The Cincinnati Bengals entered the 2023 NFL season being viewed as a Super Bowl contender. That may still end up being true, but they just dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 27-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. ... and now their fate is not only tied to their record but also, as much as ever, to the health of star quarterback Joe Burrow, who re-aggravated his calf injury in the loss.

“Whenever you have one of these things it’s always on going, it’s always something you’re managing,” Burrow told reporters after the game. "I don’t know how I’m going to feel the next couple days.''

That does not sound like very positive news for a Bengals team that now finds itself chasing the 2-0 Ravens in the AFC North. Baltimore came up with an injury issue of its own in this Week 2 meeting, with Odell Beckham Jr. and his ankle worth monitoring.

But the entire AFC North race figures to be greatly impacted by the status of Burrow, who it is fair to say has not in this early looked like the elite QB he is known to be ... surely because of the calf injury Burrow sustained during training camp, which is now a problem once again.

Burrow completed 66 percent of his passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns and one interception on Sunday against the Ravens, but it wasn't enough in the meeting between the heated rivals.

“I’m doing everything I can to get healthy and get that thing the way I need to so I can go out and perform the way I need to to win,'' said Burrow, who next week has a Bengals date with the Los Angeles Rams, while the Ravens play the Indianapolis Colts.
