The Ravens have negotiated a free-agent deal with running back Melvin Gordon … meaning maybe now his situation “sucks” just a bit less.

Baltimore does have J.K. Dobbins at the top of the depth chart, and an assortment of other standout weapons in the Lamar Jackson-led offense.

Gordon - who recently commented on the shriveling paychecks now given backs by saying “It sucks!” - will get a one-year deal worth “up to” $3 million. He could offer insurance here after having made his mark with the Broncos and the Chargers.

Gordon, a 2015 first-round NFL Draft pick, will work for coach John Harbaugh as he supervises a style change. In 2019, the Ravens broke the NFL’s all-time single-season rushing mark with 3,296 yards. Under new coordinator Todd Monken, the Ravens plan on being a better passing team - Jackson has talked about possibly throwing for 5,000 yards - and Gordon has a history that says he might be able to help there as well.

This move occurs in an NFL climate in which “the devaluation of the running back” is the league’s hottest topic as teams enter summer training camps, with the Giants’ Saquon Barkley and the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs - both tagged but unsigned - as the centerpieces of what Gordon and his peers think “sucks.”
