The Seahawks are in the middle of some big changes, and it all starts with their new head coach, whenever that search is complete.

Whoever signs on to lead the team could have a new signal caller to groom too. In ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper's latest mock, Seattle gets who many think will be a franchise player for years to come under center.

Even though Kiper doesn't have a first-round grade on him, the ESPN draft expert suggests the Seahawks will take Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who's fresh off a national championship win.

“For Seattle, the contract Geno Smith signed last March made it clear the team could get out after one season, Kiper wrote. "Smith had a decent season (20 TD passes, 9 INTs), but will he really be here long-term? I could see the Seahawks severing ties and starting fresh for whomever the new coach ends up being.”

Geno Smith has done a nice job since becoming the starter upon the departure of Russell Wilson, but his contract is up after 2025 and that would give the team ample time to groom his replacement.

In 14 games played last season, Smith threw for 3,624 yards on 323 completions and registered a 64.7 passing completion rate in the first season of a three-year, $75 million deal signed in April of 2022.

In three years at Michigan, McCarthy threw 49 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions and for 6,226 yards while completing 67.6 percent of his passes, including 72.3 percent last season.
