Why Seattle Seahawks Should Re-Sign Bobby Wagner Right Now For 2024

As the Seattle Seahawks are scraping and scrambling for an NFC playoff spot, it's never too early to start thinking about the upcoming season.

The Seattle Seahawks' 2023 season isn't over yet, no matter how fast that door seems to be closing. Seattle is just 1-4 in its last five games and has games coming up against NFC powerhouses San Francisco and Philadelphia. It's even conceivable that the Seahawks could finish the season 9-8 and still miss the playoffs in an incredibly competitive NFC.

It could be time - especially for general manager John Schneider - to be building on next season and how they can catch the 49ers in the West.

One spot that he might consider is re-signing linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Despite the Seahawks' early success, Wagner knows there's room for improvement.

Bobby Wagner

The 12-year veteran will be 34 when the new season starts and that's when most linebackers - especially the top-tier ones - begin to break down. But that doesn't look like it will happen with Wagner, who still appears to be at the top of his game.

Pro Football Focus has Wagner graded as the No. 10 linebacker in the NFL this season. One of his notable deficiencies is pass coverage, but it always has been and he's still survived as one of the best in the league.

He should come at a bargain for the Seahawks, too. He's making just $5.5 million this season after a $1.2 million signing bonus, and that's not likely to go up much. Wagner has tallied 127 tackles and 2.5 sacks this season, through 12 games. He's in line to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

And what better way for him to end his career than where it all started - and where he was a member of the vaunted Legion of Doom as a much younger player? We don't have to include 2022 in the mix - when he was a member of the division-rival Rams. That never happened. Or at least we can pretend it didn't.
