Seahawks Sign Patriots Ex LB DaMarcus Mitchell

The Seattle Seahawks have bolstered their special teams unit by signing former New England Patriots linebacker/defensive end DaMarcus Mitchell.

The Seattle Seahawks have been looking to add a “spark” to their special teams.

They may have satisfied their search by signing former New England Patriots linebacker and special teams stalwart DaMarcus Mitchell, as first reported on Sunday by KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.

The 6-3, 262-pound linebacker/defensive end was released by New England last week, in an effort to clear room on their 90-man roster to accommodate the signing of running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Mitchell, 24, started his career on offense at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He would go on to become an effective EDGE rush for Purdue. In two years as a Boilermaker, he compiled 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

New England signed Mitchell as an undrafted free agent in April 2022. He appeared in 16 games and collected eight total tackles. However, Mitchell made his impact on special teams where he logged 310 snaps on various coverage and protection units.

With Mitchell in the fold, coach Pete Carroll gains a reliable special teamer, capable of contributing on both coverage and blocking units — a need for the Seahawks which he recently shared.

“That’s classically what we are doing,” Carroll told reporters last week. “We’re looking for a place for a guy to fit in where he can compete and knock out someone who maybe has a couple more years on him because of the value of special teams. It's really important that they maximize those reps. We make a huge deal about it and really sell that hard to them. They're not missing that point, they just got to get their chances and hope they can do something.

Mitchell is expected to join his new Seahawks teammates when they return to the practice fields this week to prepare a for their final preseason till against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 26 at Lambeau Field.
