Steelers Shut Down Thoughts Of Another Cornerback
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers moved on from slot cornerback Arthur Maulet last week, fulfilling his request for a release from the team, and are currently searching for someone to replace a player that spent his two most productive years in Pittsburgh.
But don't expect the Steelers to make a splash and add someone from outside the organization. Head coach Mike Tomlin is content with the group already in-house.
"No, we're comfortable with the collective we have in that space," Tomlin said at the conclusion of the second day of rookie minicamp.
As it currently stands, the Steelers currently have nine corners on the roster. It's a healthy mix of youth and experience with Patrick Peterson, Ahkello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace leading the group. Joey Porter Jr. and Corey Trice - second and seventh-round draft picks, respectively, from this year - are expected to make major contributions right away. Then there's Madre Harper, James Pierre, Chandon Sullivan, Chris Willcox and Duke Dawson, who all provide depth.
The Steelers invited two more corners - former Memphis Tiger Syslvonta Oliver and Tyler Moore from Fort Valley State - to minicamp this weekend.
General manager Omar Khan recently said the first two players they'll test at the position will be Sullivan and Dawson.
