Steelers Release DB Keanu Neal

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue releasing veterans from their roster.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have released safety Keanu Neal due to a failed physical, the team announced.

Neal signed with the Steelers last offseason and worked as the co-starter alongside Damontae Kazee. He suffered a rib injury during the season and was placed on Injured Reserve, forcing him to miss the remainder of the year. He finished his career with one interception and 50 tackles.

He'll now hit the open market looking for a new team. Because he was released by the team, he can sign elsewhere at any time.

The release clears over $2 million of the Steelers salary cap as they approach free agency. They'll look to add another safety option in the open market, with names like Jamal Adams, Justin Simmons and Jordan Poyer making headlines as some of the top options.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson may also make sense for Pittsburgh.

As of now, Kazee and Patrick Peterson remain on the roster for 2024. Peterson transitioned to safety at the end of the season due to injuries, and could make the full-time switch this season to replace Neal.
