Steelers Urged to Sign Former Browns QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considered the top option for the former first-overall pick.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will be considering a few options when it comes to their quarterback position this offseason. Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett will be in the conversation, but outside options will likely also be brought up when trying to piece together their roster for next season.

Pro Football Focus' Gordon McGuiness believes there's an outside option that is perfect for the Steelers, and he'd like to see them pursue him.

That option is current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.

"It feels very likely that Mayfield will stick around with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but on the off chance that he does hit free agency, the Steelers should be the first team to pick up the phone," McGuiness writes. "While Mayfield hasn’t lived up to the billing of being a former No. 1 overall pick, he is back at the level of his second and third seasons with the Cleveland Browns, earning a 74.6 PFF grade with 25 big-time throws and 24 turnover-worthy plays in the 2023 regular season."

Taking a chance on Mayfield turned out well for the Buccaneers this season as they prepare for the Divisional round of the playoffs against the Detroit Lions. This season, he threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

What he'll cost will play a role, as his Spotrac market value is currently $27 million per year for four years.

The Steelers would have to figure out their cap situation, but if they can make it work, signing the former first-overall pick could be an option for them this spring.
