Steelers Waiting on Cam Heyward, Diontae Johnson Decisions

The Pittsburgh Steelers will wait to make a final call on both injuries.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without defensive tackle Cam Heyward for a while after he undergoes groin surgery and wide receiver Diontae Johnson is also expected to miss an extended period of time. But for now, the team is working slowly on their decisions regarding Injured Reserve.

The Steelers could place both players on short-term IR, shutting them down for at least four weeks. However, with Johnson's timetable unknown and Heyward's surgery still to come, Pittsburgh isn't jumping the gun on either player.

"We don’t have to make a decision, so we’re not," Tomlin said. "Time affords us more information. I’m just acknowledging that he’s out this week. We’ll take a look and see where the healing is and worry about judgments in subsequent weeks after that."

If both players end up on IR, the Steelers will free up two roster spots for the time being. If they do not, they'll continue to take up spots until they are healthy.

According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, Johnson is expected to miss four weeks, while Heyward is looking at eight-plus.
