Report: Steelers Divided on Starting QB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to decide their stance at the quarterback position, with the current expectation being that Kenny Pickett will compete with another veteran for the starting job. But reports claim there is some internal division about how they should approach the situation.
Head coach Mike Tomlin and Steelers President Art Rooney II have both said publicly that re-signing Mason Rudolph is the team's top priority. And that they would like the former third-round pick to be the veteran competing against Pickett this summer.
However, they are still hoping Pickett turns out to be "the guy" moving forward.
According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, though, there is some split within the organization about whether or not Pickett or Rudolph should be viewed as QB1 heading into the new season.
"There appears to be some internal division that maybe Mason Rudolph should be the starter after the way he finished the 2023 season, winning the final three regular season games to gain entry to the playoffs," Dulac writes.
Rudolph hasn't shut down the idea of returning to Pittsburgh but reports claim he's expected to receive bigger offers elsewhere. If he believes the Steelers are his best fit, he'll likely come back for another year. That may all be decided on the team's view of Pickett.
Rudolph is 8-4-1 all-time as a starter, while Pickett is 14-10. If both are back for the 2024 season, competition could be neck-and-neck as to who claims the job in Week 1.
