49ers Get Last-Minute Boost Ahead of Steelers Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers will see a familiar face when they host the 49ers.

PITTSBURGH -- The San Francisco 49ers offense and return game get a major boost just before they head cross-country to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, as return special, and former Steeler, Ray-Ray McCloud returns from injury.

McCloud suffered a broken wrist during training camp and missed the entire preseason. His initial timetable had him returning around Week 5 of the regular season, but head coach Kyle Shannahan announced that McCloud has been cleared to return to practice and could play against the Steelers.

McCloud left Pittsburgh last offseason, signing a two-year, $10.5 million deal with the 49ers. In two years with the Steelers, he totaled 665 kick return yards and 1,422 punt return yards and had a career year in both categories in 2021.

Last season, McCloud tallied 356 kick return and 599 punt return yards while also catching 14 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown.

While McCloud is listed as the 49ers' return starter, it's still unknown if he'll play in Week 1. He was limited in practice to start the week.
