49ers Sign Former Steelers DB

The former Pittsburgh Steelers safety ends up in San Francisco.

PITTSBURGH -- The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Tre Norwood to their practice squad, according to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson.

Norwood tried out for the 49ers last week but wasn't signed before departing. He's now joining the team on their practice squad, landing on his first roster since being waived by the Steelers during the summer.

Norwood was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the seventh-round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played 32 games, including six starts over his first two seasons with the team, recording 61 tackles, four pass deflections and an interception. He was an active member on special teams as well.

The now-49er went into training camp as a candidate to start at the nickelback spot for Pittsburgh this season. However, while competing with Chandon Sullivan and Elijah Riley, Norwood suffered a leg injury that kept him out of the preseason, and eventually ended his chances of making the roster.

He has experience playing in the slot and safety in the NFL.
