Report: Some Within Steelers Want Iowa DL Lukas Van Ness in NFL Draft
PITTSBURGH -- Don't sleep on the Pittsburgh Steelers selecting Iowa defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness, according to 93.7 The Fan host Andrew Fillipponi.
According to Fillipponi, there are names within the Steelers' front office that "really want" Van Ness in the first round. So much so, that there's a belief that he could be their target with their first-round pick. With recent reports about moving up, they could even trade to go get him.
Van Ness is an expected top 10 pick in the NFL Draft, but the Steelers have reportedly made a call to the Chicago Bears about moving up to pick nine. There was plenty of speculation about who they'd trade up to get, and now it appears Van Ness is a member of that list.
The Iowa product played 26 games for the Hawkeyes and recorded 70 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. He played both inside and outside in college but is listed as an edge rusher in the NFL Draft.
For the Steelers, they could move Van Ness inside to play a Larry Ogunjobi-type role, while also allowing him to work on the outside with T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.
To draft him, though, they'll likely have to make the trade up.
