After finishing 3-13-1 and last in the AFC South, the Houston Texans fired coach Lovie Smith and replaced him with Demeco Ryans, the franchise’s fourth coach in the past three seasons. Ryans was the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers the past two years. San Francisco reached last year’s NFC Championship game. Ryans, the 2006 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for Houston who still leads the Texans in career tackles, signed a six-year deal for this long-term overhaul.

With Ryans in place, and top draft picks quarterback C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr, Houston is moving its new era forward, starting with several critical free-agent pieces added during the offseason.

Will the Texans make their 11-38-1 record over the past three seasons a distant memory? Let’s dive into our Texans predictions available at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Houston Texans NFL Season Record & Schedule Predictions

In terms of Houston Texans predictions for the 2023-24 season, our experts are predicting an improved performance over last year. DraftKings Sportsbook has the over/under for Texans 2023-24 wins set at 6.5, with the over currently listed at +115 and the under currently listed at -135.

The logic behind this over/under-pick is simple. Ryans and his defensive acumen, along with Anderson’s menacing presence on the line, immediately provides an identity on that side of the ball. Stroud finished top five in Heisman voting each of the last two seasons while leading Ohio State to 22 wins. He threw for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions, and is immediately penciled in as Houston’s starting quarterback. While rookie quarterbacks traditionally struggle against NFL defenses, there is a fervor in Houston that has been missing for the past few years.

Houston has a very manageable schedule to build its young core against. Although there is a very difficult season opener at Baltimore, two games against defending AFC South champion Jacksonville, as well as contests against other AFC North foes Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, Houston has some legitimate chances on its schedule.

Games against the Colts, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Arizona are all winnable, with Denver, Atlanta and New Orleans all possibilities as well. Throw in a shocking result here or there, and Houston will be in business.

That being said, we don’t think everything is going to fall in place in the opener at Baltimore against Roquan Smith and the Ravens defense. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson is returning from a season-ending injury himself, so we believe taking the under on 43.5 points is the best route to go. Both teams have made major personnel changes on offense, so their defensive identities will win out in the season opener.

Texans Win Total & Win-Loss Record Predictions for 2023-24

DraftKings Sportsbook offers the best odds for the Houston Texans to win exactly five, six or seven games, at +500. We like six wins for the Texans, doubling their victory total from each of the past two seasons. Ryans and the young infusion of talent will bring about some exciting upsets, with reality setting in against some of the bigger AFC boys on the schedule.

If Stroud struggles early, young quarterback Davis Mills performed admirably himself last year, throwing for 3,118 yards and 17 touchdowns. He provides competent depth while Dameon Pierce, who ran for 954 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie last year, provides a backfield foundation to work off of.
