DeMeco Ryans Explains Houston Texans Signing of 'Very Talented' Jason Verrett
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans added former Pro Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett to their practice squad roster Wednesday morning. The Texans worked out Verrett following the loss of Shaquill Griffin due to a hamstring injury.
Coach DeMeco Ryans served as Verrett's defensive coordinator during his final two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
"It's nice adding Jason to the practice squad," Ryans said. "He brings that veteran experience. He is an outstanding young man, and it is great just having him on the field and in the building.
Ryans said Verrett is a "very talented guy" who thrives in man coverage. Ryans believes Verrett is one of the best corners he has been around. But durability has been Verrett's lone issue.

Verrett has suffered two ACL injuries and a pair of Achilles tears. His latest Achilles injury came during the 49ers 37-15 victory over the Carolina Panthers in November.
Verrett is a former first-round pick by the then-San Diego Chargers during the 2014 NFL Draft. He has played six or more games three times in his career.
His best season came in 2015. While appearing in a career-best 14 games, Verrett finished the year recording 47 tackles, a dozen pass deflections and three interceptions. Verrett's sophomore season marked his lone Pro Bowl campaign.
Injuries have hampered the Texans' defensive back unit six weeks into the season. In addition to Griffin, Derek Stingley Jr. remains on injured reserve after sustaining a hamstring injury. Slot corner Tavierre Thomas has missed the previous three games following hand surgery.
