Texans' Chase Winovich Opens Up About Sack Against Patriots

Houston Texans defensive end Chase Winovich recorded his first sack of the preseason against the New England Patriots, his former team

The Houston Texans signed free agent Chase Winovich to a 1-year, $2 million contract this offseason, hoping to add depth to the defensive end position.

Winovich spent three seasons with the New England Patriots from 2019-2021 before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 offseason. Winovich struggled with a hamstring injury during his lone season in Cleveland, as he only played in eight games before becoming a free agent.

Winovich was placed on the active/PUP list and missed a decent chunk of the Texans training camp this summer. However, he was healthy enough to participate the last couple of weeks and played in the preseason opener against the Patriots.

Winovich logged two tackles and a sack against his former team. He told reporters that the game "went well," but he was just happy to be out on the gridiron.

"Anytime that I have the opportunity to take the field, I consider it a huge blessing," Winovich said. "My family and friends were in attendance, so getting that sack considering the Patriots were my former team meant a lot to me. I just tried to have a lot of fun."

Winovich explained that his journey back from injury wasn't easy and he's grateful to the training staff for getting him back to the game he loves.

"I felt like they stood by me every single day," Winovich said. "I'd say 'don't count me out yet' and they would respond with 'we'd never count you out, we know how hard you work.'

Winovich thanked defensive line coaches Jacques Cesaire and Rod Wright as well.

"They believed in me and included me in meeting rooms when I was dealing with that stuff and just really kept me invested," Winovich said. "That sack feathered the cap against my former team...It's just a privilege for me to be a Texan and I'm really happy to be in Houston."
