DeMeco Ryans' Texans Contract: Is 6 Years Too Long?

After firing the last two coaches after one year, the Texans may be over-correcting with DeMeco Ryans.

The Houston Texans have found their guy in DeMeco Ryans — and are obviously all in.

With the arrival of San Francisco’s former defensive coordinator, the Texans made the biggest offseason move to turn things around.

But while the hire itself did not come as a surprise, after two interviews went apparently exceptionally well, the details of the contract sure did.

The Texans signed Ryans to a six-year contract. The deal would make him the third-longest tenured coach in franchise history should he last all the way through.

And if six years sounds long, just consider the fate of the last two Texans coaches. David Culley and Lovie Smith both lasted just one season, registering the two worst records in team history.

So, why a long-term deal for Ryans?

All signs point toward a mutual trust between Ryans and the front office. Being a former Texans player himself, Ryans understands the franchise and the fan base. Seen as a players' coach, Ryans already appears to have buy-in from the team.

Ahead of his first season with Houston, Ryans made clear his intentions were to “build a program filled with players who have a special work ethic.”

He's got at least six years to do so. ... with the one caveat: DeMeco is being paid to coach here for six years, but not necessarily to coach here for six years. In that sense, the years and the money aren't "too much'' ... because there is no cap on coach salaries.

Hopefully, there's no cap on DeMeco's success, either.
