Texans' Dalton Schultz: C.J. Stroud 'A Hell of a QB'

Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz reveals that rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is emerging as a leader.

Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz spent his first five years in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys but moved south to Houston in free agency this spring.

Schultz hauled in 57 receptions for 577 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games last season, which was top-10 in all categories among tight ends. In 2021, Schultz was sixth in receiving yards, third in receptions, and second in touchdowns (four-way tie for first) in his position.

Nevertheless, Schultz is going from nine-year veteran quarterback Dak Prescott as his leader to rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud commanding the offense. While this transition may be difficult for most pass-catchers to adapt to, Schultz believes the 21-year-old is headed in the right direction.

"C.J.'s his own guy...and he's going to mold himself into his own player in this league," Schultz told KPRC2. "I think he's a hell of a quarterback, so he's got a good opportunity to take advantage of the situation here.

Schultz listed a few assets that Stroud has already brought to the Texans offense as a leader.

“I mean number one is that he has a good arm," Schultz said. "Number two, he has a good head. I mean, he's a smart decision-maker. He throws a lot of really, really accurate deep balls, in my opinion. At the end of the day, he has the tools to put everybody in the right spot, as just a leadership guy.”

Schultz broke down Stroud's progress in the huddle, stating that "it's coming along."

“It's your first time as a rookie, it's gonna kind of be hard to hear the play, spit it out correctly, make the break, get to the line…there's a lot of mechanics that go into that stuff. Lately, I think it's been clicking for him.”

Stroud is aiming to continue his pursuit of guiding Houston's offense during Saturday's final preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.
