Texans' Hiring of Coach DeMeco Ryans: 'A Steal!’ - 49ers All-Pro Trent Williams
Coach DeMeco Ryans has received nothing but praise since taking over the Houston Texans' coaching vacancy in January.
Future Hall of Famer and former teammate J.J. Watt believes Ryans possesses the intangibles needed to restore a winning culture within the franchise. Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil credited Ryans for bringing "a whole new vibe" to NRG Stadium during mandatory minicamp.
But if there is one player whose praise comes as a testament, San Francisco 49ers' All-Pro tackle Trent Williams had a chance to experience Ryans' impact during his tenure as the defensive coordinator with the franchise.
“Yeah, I think they got a steal,” Williams said per KPRC. “He can be a staple for this organization for a long time. He’s a very talented coach. Obviously, has pedigree, played this game for a long time, played it the right way and coaches it the right way. I think he’s going to have a lot of success out here.”
Williams may not have had a chance to work with Ryans one-on-one. But the 13-year veteran understands the influence Ryans will have on the Texans' defensive improvements, which has ranked near the bottom of the league since 2020.
Ryans began coaching in 2017 as San Francisco's defensive quality control coach. He took over as the 49ers' defensive coordinator in 2019 and elevated San Francisco's defense into one of the league's best.
During the 2022 season, the 49ers recorded the second-most takeaways (30) while giving up an average of 16.3 points. As a result of their defense, the 49ers went 13-4 and advanced to the NFC Championship game, where they lost 31-7 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
