Texans Honor Uvalde for National Gun Violence Awareness Day at OTAs
On the eve of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, the Houston Texans players and staff took a stand in support of the Uvalde community after a shooting at Robb Elementary School left 21 dead in May of 2022.
Texans players and staff wore bright orange shirts at OTAs on Thursday ahead of the national day of remembrance on Friday. The shirts donned a script 'H' and 'U' on the chest in honor of Houston and Uvalde. The back nameplate featured 'Uvalde' in script lettering.
This isn't the first effort the team has made for the victims and community. Not long after the shooting, the Texans donated $400,000 to the Robb School Memorial Fund.
The donation effort, according to the organization, was spearheaded by $200,000 worth of support given by players alone. This donation was matched by the front office to make up the initial $400,000 sum.
At the 2022 NFL season-opener, the team invited Uvalde High School football players to be honored before the Texans were to square off against the Indianapolis Colts. This was also where the Texans unveiled 'Uvalde Strong' decals on each player's helmet. What's more, former coach Lovie Smith and the Texans purchased new Nike football jerseys for the Uvalde team to wear in 2022.
Thursday's display is a reminder of the team's continued support of another Texas community, from Lovie Smith to DeMeco Ryans.
Nationally, Gun Violence Awareness Day is also known as #WearOrange Day as people across the country pause to honor those effected by gun-related crimes.
