Return of J.J.? How and Why Watt Considered Texans Comeback

J.J. Watt shares on the Pat McAfee show he considered unretiring to join the Houston Texans during the 2023 season.

During the Houston Texans' successful first season under Coach Ryans and with standout rookie QB Stroud, speculation grew about J.J. Watt possibly coming out of retirement to play for Houston.

Watt's frequent presence at the facility and discussions on the Pat McAfee show fueled this speculation further, especially as the team sought another pass rusher.

Recently, Watt hinted on the show that fans weren't off the mark with their hopes.

"Halfway through last season, I found myself keeping an eye on both the Steelers and Texans situations, although it never evolved into a serious consideration," Watt said.

"I'm content with how things unfolded. However, had there been an opportunity to significantly contribute to a team's Super Bowl aspirations or address a pressing need to elevate their performance, it might have warranted deeper contemplation. But merely returning for the sake of it would have felt somewhat frivolous."

In other words, it appears that Watt's return would have been more plausible had it involved teaming up with his brothers or joining a Texans squad positioned as clear Super Bowl contenders.

Nevertheless, Watt's acknowledgment sheds light on the challenges facing the Texans' pass rush.

With breakout performer Jonathan Greenard and midseason addition Derek Barnett both facing uncertain futures as unrestricted free agents, the team's ability to improve their defensive line becomes a focal point as Ryans aims to put together a championship-caliber defense.

It just seems likely that Watt, as much as Texans fans might want it to happen, won't be part of those plans.
