PFF's 2024 Post-Super Bowl Mock Draft Gives Will Anderson Jr. Help On Defensive Line

The Houston Texans need some help on the defensive front, and in PFF's latest two-round NFL Mock Draft, that is exactly what they get.

As the dust settles after the Super Bowl, the NFL swiftly pivots its attention to the 2024 draft, and the Houston Texans are poised to make strategic moves to strengthen their roster.

In their recent mock draft, Pro Football Focus (PFF) has projected some help on both sides of the ball for the Texans as they seek to elevate their team for the challenges ahead.

Round 1 Pick 23 - Illinois DL Jer'Zhan Newton

In the offseason, the Texans are confronted with the potential loss of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to free agency, sparking a focus on fortifying their defensive line. While priority is placed on enhancing the edge, the team acknowledges the importance of interior improvement. In its draft strategy, Houston aims to maximize value by considering prospects like Newton, who offers versatility across the defensive line.

Newton's lean frame and below-average length limit his effectiveness as an interior defender, making him susceptible to double-teams and combo blocks. His lack of mass caps his power capacity and torque on extensions, while his hands lack elite knockback force, hindering his ability to create movement.

Despite his athleticism, Newton's below-average length and play strength occasionally impede his ability to control blocks and finish tackles. Additionally, he tends to jump the snap prematurely, resulting in penalties.

Round 2 Pick 59 Tez Walker WR

Given Tank Dell's standout rookie season being cut short by injury, addressing the wide receiver position is imperative for the team.

Walker, a tall and lean receiver with explosive long-stride ability, excels at quickly accelerating and finding space up the seam. Known for his elite long speed, he specializes in stacking defenders and generating separation in the deep third of the field. Despite his slender frame, Walker possesses underrated density and excellent length, enabling him to make high-difficulty adjustments with little space.

The Texans' approach the draft with clear objectives, aiming to address key areas of need such as the offensive line and wide receiver positions. With a focus on improving the running game and fortifying the defensive line, the Texans seek to make strategic selections that will have an immediate impact.

As they evaluate prospects, Housto is poised to make calculated decisions to shape the future of its franchise and enhance their competitiveness for the upcoming season.
