AllTitans Draft Grades: Assessment of Titans 2023 NFL Draft Haul

In this story:
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans complete the 2023 NFL draft with a strong group of prospects with athleticism and experience. Some of the picks were it bit controversial to some, but that depends on your view of each prospect and their value. The staff at AllTitans.com weighs in on the prospects chosen and gives the Titans a letter grade for their performance.
Tyler Rowland — B-plus
Analysis: The Tennessee Titans are currently trying to do two things. They want to try and field a competitive team while also having an eye to the future. The problem is if you try to walk down two paths, you'll only walk down the wrong one.
If the Titans trade Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry in the near future, my grade for this draft will come up, but in the meantime, it appears the Titans are in an identity crisis. If you want to help Henry and Tannehill compete one last time, you don't spend your second- and third-round pick on their future replacements.
The words we are told by the Titans and then their actions don't align. I like the pick of Peter Skoronski regardless of direction. I like the prospect Tyjae Spears is and think Josh Whyle can help in year one. However, trading a 2024 pick to get Will Levis and then saying he is QB3 just makes zero sense. Jaelyn Duncan is a risk pick due to his lack of effort on the field and Colton Dowell is a dart throw.
The prospects are solid as a group, but the Titans lack of commitment to a direction is frustrating and while it can still be resolved, right now it looks like a bit of a mess.
Greg Arias — A
Analysis: The Titans went into this draft with two objectives, as I see it.
First, beef up an offensive line that allowed 49 sacks last season. They got two big, physical guys in Skoronski and Duncan; both played left tackle in college and are willing to move inside if necessary. Those two, along with Andre Dillard, Daniel Brunskill, and the rest of the returning linemen, give Mike Vrabel, Tim Kelly, and Jason Houghtaling a variety of pieces to choose from.
Second, to find replacements for Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry, which they did with Levis and Spears. Spears will likely see playing time right away, while Levis will have a tougher road to earning his. Unless the team struggles out of the gate, they decide to throw him into the fire and see what he can do. Still, I like both thee picks and the value they bring.
As for Josh Whyle and Colton Dowell, I think both bring value, and can be weapons for the offense this season. Whyle as a move tight end who can help control the middle of the field, and Dowell, who after talking with more people about him, I'm really beginning to gravitate toward, who can provide a variety of dirrent aspects to this passing game, if Kelly will step away from the running blueprint and get creative.
Tom Brew — A-minus
This is such a tough exercise, because the grade has to go with a mindset, and the only way I can justify giving them an A-minus is if I think former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis will have a nice pro career.
So, yes, I am being optimistic — cautiously optimistic — that that's the case. He has the tools, and can do good things. And the one thing he needed the most — a good dose of humility — he got on Thursday night when the first round came and went and he didn't get picked. I think he comes into camp with a lot to prove. If he's the starter at some point this year and keeps the job for several years, than it's a good draft.
I loved the Peter Skoronski pick, but as I said when we graded the first round, I wouldn't have minded one of the stud receivers there. I think Tyjae Spears was a reach, but I did watch that bowl game where he rushed for 200-plus and four touchdowns. The others? Maybe they help, maybe they wont. Could I have been a downer and given them a C-plus too? Sure. It's all wait and see.
