Alexander Mattison Officially Released, Says Goodbye to Vikings
The Vikings officially released running back Alexander Mattison on Monday, finalizing a move that was first reported late last week. In doing so, they save $3.35 million in cap space while eating $1.25 million in dead money.
Mattison also posted a goodbye to the Vikings on social media.
Things didn't work out for Mattison last season after he was brought back on a two-year deal to replace Dalvin Cook in the Vikings' starting running back role. He averaged fewer than four yards per carry for the third consecutive year, lost two critical fumbles, and became just the second player since 2003 with at least 180 carries and no rushing touchdowns (though he did catch three scores).
Originally drafted in the third round out of Boise State in 2019, Mattison thrived as a backup and change-of-pace back in his first few NFL seasons, recording several big games when Cook was out due to injury. But his efficiency waned over the last couple years and he was unable to capitalize on a big opportunity in 2023. His disappointing play, combined with a $2.75 million guarantee that was set to vest soon, made it a fairly straightforward decision for the Vikings to move on.
Football performance aside, it's worth noting that Mattison consistently showed himself to be a classy, thoughtful person who was active in the community and an advocate for progress in the areas of mental health and social justice. He'll get another opportunity somewhere in 2024, likely in a backup or complementary role.
As for the Vikings, they'll look to add to a backfield that is currently headlined by third-year pro Ty Chandler, who they have high hopes for.
