Vikings Save North of $3 Million in Cap Space By Releasing Alexander Mattison

Mattison struggled mightily as the Vikings' starter in 2023. Now he's a free agent again.

The Vikings informed running back Alexander Mattison on Thursday that he is being released, according to numerous reports. Things simply didn't work out for him as the team's starter in 2023, and now he's a free agent for the second year in a row.

By releasing Mattison, the Vikings have freed up $3.35 million in cap space while eating $1.25 million in dead money. He had $2.75 million in guarantees scheduled to vest in two weeks, so this move, while unexpected, shouldn't be too surprising.

Last offseason, after his four-year rookie contract with the Vikings had expired, Mattison signed a two-year, $7 million contract to stay in Minnesota. With Dalvin Cook being released, this was his opportunity to finally take over as RB1 — and he was unable to capitalize on that chance. Mattison had an extremely disappointing season that included multiple key fumbles, zero rushing touchdowns, and the loss of his starting job in mid-December.

Mattison finished the year with 180 carries for 700 yards, becoming just the second player since 2003 with that many carries and no rushing touchdowns (though he did have three receiving scores). He averaged fewer than four yards per carry for the third consecutive season and finished with a 61.8 PFF grade, which ranked 34th out of the 35 backs with at least 150 carries last season. His fumbles against the Eagles and Broncos were costly in close losses.

Ty Chandler, who led the Vikings' backfield down the stretch, is the favorite to take over the RB1 role in 2024. RFA Cam Akers, who tore his Achilles in November, may or may not be back. The Vikings will also undoubtedly add at least one running back, as the other players currently on the roster are Kene Nwangwu, Myles Gaskin, and DeWayne McBride.
