Predators Fall to Maple Leafs in Frantic Overtime Thriller

Despite a strong start and a night filled with milestones, Nashville comes up short in its first road game of the season

Nashville and Toronto could not be contained to 60 minutes of action. A high-scoring affair required an extra frame to settle the score. For the final four minutes and forty-six seconds of the frame, the two teams went to war. Each player who took the ice in the overtime left it all out on the ice. Lying out in desperation and crashing to the ground in exhaustion, the scene was somewhere between a car wreck and a cartoon chase with the dramatic slipping and sliding.

Ultimately, the Maple Leafs gained the final edge as Auston Matthews tallied the deciding goal with fourteen seconds left in the overtime period. Nashville (1-1-1) dropped its first road test of the season despite it being the team's best offensive effort of the year so far.

Nashville managed to get out in front with two goals in a strong opening period, and added another to go up 3-0 at the beginning of the second. Toronto finally stopped the bleeding with a pair of goals in quick succession from John Tavares and then William Nylander, capitalizing on a power play.

Steven Stamkos recorded the Predators' final goal of the day with seven minutes left in the second period. It marked his second goal of the day, while his first, also the team's first, marked a major milestone in the NHL record books. Stamkos is now in sole possession of 17th place in career goals scored, now sitting at 627 career tallies.

Another significant career scoring achievement was reached by Filip Forsberg. The Nashville lifer reached his 1,000th career point with an assist to Music City newcomer Nils Hoglander in the first period, after also being credited on Stamkos' first score. Hoglander also had a two-goal outing, bringing him to three total on the season. Although it's still early in the season, Hoglander is on pace for his best career scoring year.

The scoring efforts of Stamkos and Hoglander carried the Predators to victory last time out, but it was not enough this time around. 2026 first-overall pick Gavin McKenna recorded his first career goal to close out a three-goal period in the middle frame.

With momentum swinging completely out of favor for Nashville, clinging to a one-goal lead entering the third period, Toronto seemed poised to complete the comeback. After overwhelming the Maple Leafs early on, they closed out the game, outshooting the Predators 37-25.

The nonstop attack resulted in a game-tying score in the third period by Jack Roslovic. Juuse Saros put forward his best efforts to prevent the collapse, making a season-best 32 saves. Saros, who led the NHL in saves last season, made 30 saves on 17 separate occasions. Tonight marked his first time with that many saves this year.

"It was an entertaining game. [Saros] made some incredible saves [...] the three-on-zero was pretty awesome," Head Coach Andrew Brunette said after the game. "It was probably a fun overtime for the fans, not much for the coaches. We had our looks, but didn't capitalize on our two-on-ones."

Throughout overtime, the Maple Leafs saw repeated breakaway opportunities, but Saros held firm. A three-man break late in the frame seemed to be the end. However, the Predators' netminder made the miraculous save.

The game culminated with Saros' wall finally breaking. Just moments after shutting down a Toronto charge, the Maple Leafs found an opening on the top shelf to seal the victory.

Nashville will have another opportunity to secure its first road victory as the Predators continue their three-game tour of Canada with a matchup against Montreal on Thursday and Ottawa on Saturday. The Predators visit the Canadians at 6 p.m. CT at the Bell Centre
