Ski patrol member Scott Cecchi checks the slope angle in a section of the backcountry near Castle Peak on Jan. 9, 2004. Cecchi is directly under the cornice where an avalanche on New Year's Day 2004 killed Drew Gashler. While Cecchi is exactly where you do not want to be during a wind or weather event, several days of melt-freeze conditions solidified the snowpack enough to safely take reading below the cornice.
