In this story:

Everyone knew that Quinn Hughes wouldn't be staying in Vancouver for long given that the Canucks were languishing at the bottom of the Pacific Division. But nobody could have predicted that the franchise would pull the trigger on a trade midway through the season.

In a move that no one saw coming, Hughes was shipped to the Minnesota Wild. Since then, the former Norris trophy winner has proved that he can thrive anywhere, getting 49 points across 45 games to get his fifth 60-assist season in a row.

But now his latest game brings him to a collision course against the very team that made him into the superstar he is today. The Wild will welcome the Canucks at the Grand Casino Arena. Nobody knows Vancouver better than the D-man, having played 459 games for them. But today, things are different.

Hughes Plays Down the Emotion

A win against the Pacific Division team would allow the Wild to clinch the third playoff spot in the Central Division. So when Hughes was asked about the significance of the matchup, he admitted the significance of the moment. However, he also made his intentions very clear that the pace of the season has left little room for reflection.

"I just feel like you're so day-to-day in the season," Hughes said. "So much just happened that you don't even really think about it until it's here, so it probably won't feel real till we're actually playing."

The former Canucks captain added that the sheer volume of events this season has made it difficult to process everything in real time. He suggested the full weight of the year, including the trade, the Olympics, and the playoff push, would only sink in once summer arrived and there was time to look back.

Hughes Leaves Lasting Legacy in Vancouver

Hughes was drafted seventh overall by the Canucks in 2018 and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer among defensemen, surpassing Alexander Edler's record of 409 points in October. He won the Norris Trophy in 2024 and was named team captain before the trade ended his tenure with the organization.

Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford called it a tough but necessary decision as Vancouver shifted toward a youth rebuild. Hughes, for his part, was gracious about how the organization handled the situation and praised Rutherford publicly after the move.

Minnesota needs little motivation beyond the standings tonight. The Wild are in a strong position to secure a postseason berth and have been one of the more consistent teams in the Western Conference since the Olympic break. And tonight, the Canucks will see just how good their former captain really is.
