Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, as well as several other notable principals, have expressed severe criticism against Helmut Marko for his comments about Sergio Perez. These remarks, which alluded to Perez's ethnicity, have created a stir in the F1 community ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko drew widespread condemnation from team bosses, including Toto Wolff, Zak Brown, and Guenther Steiner, over his comments regarding Sergio Perez's South American ethnicity.
  • Prominent figures like Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff emphasized the pressing need for more diversity and inclusion in the world of Formula 1, arguing that such remarks have no place in the sport.
  • Despite Marko's public and private apologies, the lack of sensitivity in his statement has prompted further discussions on the importance of respect and understanding within the F1 community.

Team principals and influential figures within Formula 1 have united in their criticism of Marko's comments. Lewis Hamilton, known for his activism on racial issues, has has voiced his concerns.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has been forthright in his condemnation, saying:

“It's not only what has been said, but it's the mindset that you can even come up with these things, and that hasn't got any place in Formula One.

“That's not something that should have been said in the past and certainly not now in the future.

Continuing, he emphasised the ongoing efforts in the F1 community to promote diversity, adding:

“We all know that we need more diversity in Formula One, more inclusion, and the teams do their best to create an environment where this is possible

"Obviously statements like this don’t shine the light on Formula One it deserves for all of its activities.”

McLaren CEO, Zak Brown, also stressed the importance of careful communication, stating:

“I think you have to be very careful what you say to anybody. It was not a great comment. We can understand why people were offended by it. You have to be very respectful of everyone and not make comments that can be viewed inappropriately.”

Guenther Steiner, the Haas Team Principal, concurred with Brown, suggesting that generalising or stereotyping in today's world is not acceptable.

“Yeah, I agree with Zak. I mean, stereotyping these days doesn't work. You know, we really need to be careful what you say.”

In the midst of the controversy, it's notable that Marko has apologised both publicly and privately to Perez. But, as some have suggested, for many, an apology isn't enough.
