A's Top Prospect Leo De Vries Could Miss Remainder of 2026 Season

He had a solid year at Double-A

The Athletics' No. 1 prospect, infielder Leo De Vries, landed on the Double-A injured list last week. And now, the highly touted 19-year-old might be on the shelf for the rest of the minor league regular season.

De Vries, MLB Pipeline's No. 2 overall prospect for 2026, is "dealing with a sore right shoulder" and has been "sidelined from throwing for four weeks," according to MLB.com's Martín Gallegos. With the Midland RockHounds' regular season set to end on Sept. 13, this most likely means the young prospect has played his last Double-A game of 2026. However, Gallegos didn't rule out the possibility of the switch-hitting infielder playing in the Arizona Fall League if he's healthy by then.

The San Diego Padres signed De Vries out of the Dominican Republic in January 2024. He was then one of the top prospects that San Diego included in the blockbuster deal for All-Star closer Mason Miller at last year's trade deadline. Even though his first full season in the A's farm system has seemingly come to an end, the talented teenager put together a strong campaign at the plate in 2026.

How did Leo De Vries play in his first full year with the A's?

Overall, De Vries had solid offensive numbers this season for the Midland RockHounds. In 93 Double-A games this year, the 19-year-old produced a .290 batting average, a .378 on-base percentage, and an .836 OPS with 13 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases. In 2025, he hit .255 with 15 homers and 74 RBIs in 118 games across two minor league levels and two organizations. Assuming his 2026 campaign is over, the A's prospect set new career-high marks in stolen bases, batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS this year.

In the field, De Vries has mostly played shortstop in the minors. But this year, he also made 15 appearances at third base. Gaining some experience at the hot corner could help the young prospect make his way into the A's lineup sooner, especially after the organization signed shortstop Jacob Wilson to a seven-year extension earlier this year.

While De Vries' 2026 regular season is most likely finished, many baseball fans will be looking forward to seeing the A's prospect back in action next year.
