Coco Gauff Says She Was in a "Really Dark Place" in 2023

Social media has amplified a lot of negativity. But one of the better things to come of it has been the normalization of mental health discussions.
When it comes to social media and mental health, Coco Gauff knows her stuff.
The 20-year-old has dealt with unimaginable pressure which very few tennis players have had to experience. Luckily for athletes and fans, Gauff is mature and poised enough to share the wisdom she has acquired through her young adulthood.
In the leadup to Wimbledon, Gauff gave a poignant statement on her inspirational journey from a dark place to a better mental space.

Gauff said, "I wish a-year-ago-me could see me now. I was really in a dark place... But I think I've grown a lot. I'm glad I used that moment to strive to get better. The next person of the season was the best I've ever had. That just shows bad moments don't last forever."
Amen to that. Gauff has weathered some tough storms over the past year and is currently ranked as the World No. 2. More importantly, she is happy, healthy, and an example for everyone.
Guaff begins her Wimbledon campaign on Monday morning against Caroline Dolehide. Tennis fans can follow Sports Illustrated's Serve on SI for all the most important news from the sport.
