Orgain Protein Powder: Quality of Ingredients

Orgain Nutrition Label

Orgain Organic Protein Blend

The Organic Protein Blend is a combination of organic pea protein, organic brown rice protein and organic chia seed protein. By blending three protein types, Orgain is able to make a well-rounded blend that includes a full profile of amino acids, unlike plant-based protein powders that only use one protein source. This blend includes the nine essential amino acids we need to build the proteins to keep our body functioning well. It’s also USDA-certified organic, vegan and non-GMO, so it fits well into a plant-based or vegan diet.

Orgain Organic Creamer Base

Like the protein blend, the creamer base is compiled of Certified USDA organic ingredients. It’s a mix of acacia, high oleic sunflower oil, rice dextrin, sunflower lecithin and rosemary extract. This base provides a creamy texture that makes the powder easy to drink, without the dairy, soy or lactose ingredients that typically improve a drink’s texture.

Other ingredients

The other ingredients on the nutrition label are used to sweeten and flavor the protein blend and creamer base. Apart from Orgain’s Simple Protein Powder, which is sweetened with coconut sugar, Orgain’s protein powders contain stevia extract and five grams of erythritol in place of sugar. The powders are flavored with organic natural flavors and sea salt. Each protein powder also includes organic acacia, organic guar gum and xanthan gum, which are emulsifiers and thickening agents that improve the texture of the powder. Acacia also serves as a prebiotic to increase levels of healthy bacteria in your gut.

Orgain Protein Powder: Nutrition Facts

Orgain Protein Powder has slightly more calories than some whey protein powders, but it is still a low-calorie option. The additional calories and net carbs are unsurprising as plant-based protein powders tend to have more calories, fat and carbohydrates than whey powders because of their nut or pea bases. Because of the low-calorie count, this powder is a good option for individuals that want a supplement to help lose weight or gain lean muscle. Since it has 21 grams of protein per serving, which is just over the recommended post-workout protein serving of 20 grams, it’s a great option for post-workout recovery.

A majority of Orgain’s protein powders have zero grams of added sugar. Instead of sugar, Orgain sweetens its powders with organic stevia extract and erythritol. Both are natural sweeteners, but Stevia is derived directly from plants while erythritol is a sugar alcohol sourced from corn via fermentation.

Orgain’s Simple Protein Powder and Oatmilk Plant-Based Protein Powders are the only two powders that contain added sugar with the Simple Protein Powder containing the most (five grams) because it includes coconut sugar rather than sugar substitutes. Orgain’s low sugar content makes it a better choice for those who want to lose weight or have a risk of cardiovascular disease because a high sugar intake can cause weight gain and an increased chance of cardiovascular disease.

Orgain Protein Powder Flavors

Orgain has an impressive array of flavors that provide ample variety for consumers to choose their favorite one. While they carry the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and peanut butter, Orgain stands apart from other brands because of their unique and more adventurous flavors that include:

  • Cookies and cream
  • Strawberries and cream
  • Chocolate coconut
  • Creamy chocolate fudge
  • Chocolate caramel sea salt
  • Churro caramel swirl
  • Iced coffee
  • Chai latte
  • Pumpkin spice
  • Vanilla horchata

If you dislike stevia like some reviewers, Orgain offers an unsweetened flavor and a "Simple" version that is sweetened with coconut sugar instead. The iced coffee protein powder contains 60 milligrams of caffeine if you’re looking for an energy boost.

Orgain Protein Powder Cost

Protein Powders can be an expensive investment, with some brands exceeding $50 for a two-pound bag. However, Orgain’s Protein Powder is a relatively inexpensive and budget-friendly option in comparison to other brands. The price of each powder varies by flavor, but the two-pound canisters are all under $30. Here’s a breakdown of the costs and sizes of the most popular flavors:

  • Creamy Chocolate Fudge: $28.49 for 20 servings; $1.42 per serving
  • Vanilla Bean: $28.49 for 20 servings; $1.42 per serving
  • Simple: $28.49 for 15 servings; $1.90 per serving

The brand also offers a subscription option that allows you to save 25 percent on your first order and 10 percent on all following orders.

Who Should Use Orgain Protein Powder

Note: It’s always advised to speak to your healthcare professional before adding a protein supplement to your routine.

Orgain Protein Powder is ideal for those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. It is also made without lactose or soy ingredients so it is a good alternative for individuals with allergies. The low-calorie and low-sugar combination also makes this a great option for those looking to lose weight or gain lean muscle mass. Since it has 15 carbs per serving, it’s an excellent choice for those following a keto diet. Additionally, the powder’s full amino acid profile can supplement those who do not have a well-rounded diet.

Who Should NOT Use Orgain Protein Powder

Although Orgain’s Plant-based Protein Powder can be an effective supplement to promote a small and steady amount of muscle mass, we would not recommend it for someone trying to gain weight or significant muscle mass. Those who are trying to increase muscle mass may want to opt for a protein powder specifically formulated for muscle gain. The low-calorie formula makes it a better option for those wanting to lose weight. We would also not recommend Orgain protein powders to individuals with nut allergies because some flavors contain nut products.

Benefits of Orgain Protein Powder

Muscle growth

Unlike many other vegan protein powders, Orgain Protein Powder contains a full profile of amino acids, including 1,770 milligrams of the amino acid Leucine, which works to repair damaged muscle tissue and grow new muscle tissue. Studies have also shown that taking an amino acid supplement can increase lean body mass. So if you’re looking to build a moderate amount of lean muscle, Orgain Protein Powder is a good supplement to add to your diet.

Allergy and diet conscious

Because Orgain is a plant-based protein powder, it accommodates many dietary and allergy restrictions. Its protein formula is Certified Vegan by Vegan Action, making it a great supplement for individuals on plant-based diets. It is also soy-free, which is one of the most common food allergens, and gluten-free, making it safe for those with celiac disease. The one drawback is that some flavors may contain nut ingredients which is another common food allergen.

Weight loss

Orgain’s low-calorie and low-sugar protein powder can be an advantageous addition to your weight loss regime. For those trying to lose weight, the Mayo Clinic advises sticking to foods that are low in saturated fats, calories and added sugars. Orgain checks all of these boxes, with most flavors containing zero grams of added sugar, half a gram of saturated fat and about 150 calories per serving.

Side Effects of Orgain Protein Powder

While Orgain Protein Powder is safe for most people, eating too much protein for a long period of time can damage your kidneys. Other side effects could include an upset stomach and allergic reactions if you are intolerant to one of the ingredients. If you have an allergy, we recommended checking the ingredient list to avoid purchasing a product that will give you a reaction.

Our Experience Using Orgain Protein Powder

A tub of Orgain organic protein powder in Cookies 'n Cream flavor on the floor of a Crossfit gym

Taste and flavors

As an athlete, I routinely use protein supplements after workouts and have tried a range of protein powders. Orgain’s Cookies ‘n Cream Protein Powder is one of the best-tasting protein powders I have used. Orgain’s Creamer Base provides a creamy texture with a less chalky taste than other powders. Although I have only tested one flavor, one reviewer called Orgain’s Simple Vanilla Protein Powder “one of the best tasting vanilla flavored shakes.” Other reviewers love the chocolate flavors. Personally, I think the churro caramel swirl and chocolate coconut flavors sound like delicious additions to my next oatmeal recipe or protein shake.

Mixability

During my testing, I mixed the protein powder in a water bottle, with a mixer and in a blender. While it was still drinkable when mixed in the water bottle, it did not completely combine and resulted in clumps in the drink, making it slightly unpleasant to swallow. I found a blender to be the best method of mixing the protein powder because it resulted in a smooth, clump-free shake. I also mixed it with both water and oat milk. While I thought the oat milk tasted better, the protein powder mixed more smoothly with water. Orgain’s protein powder will also mix well in your favorite overnight oats recipe for a more nutritious and protein-packed recipe. However, Orgain warns that microwaving the formula may lessen the nutritional value of the protein powder, so if you want to make hot oatmeal we recommend cooking it on the stove.

Recipes

Protein Shake

To mix my protein shake, I followed the suggested recipe on the package. Here’s a breakdown of the recipe:

  • Two scoops of an Orgain Protein Powder of your choice
  • 12 ounces of cold water or your favorite plant-based milk
  • Blend in a blender or shaker bottle for around 30-45 seconds

If you want to add a little more flavor to your shake, try mixing in your favorite fruits or add a scoop of Greek yogurt for additional protein. For example, you could add fresh or frozen strawberries to your chocolate protein shake for chocolate-covered strawberry flavor. You can also add a scoop of your favorite collagen supplement to promote bone, tissue and skin health.

Overnight Oats

For breakfast, I like to prep overnight oats with a scoop of protein powder for an energizing and protein-packed meal. Here’s the recipe I use:

  • ½ cup of rolled oats
  • One cup of water
  • One scoop of Orgain protein powder
  • A splash of maple syrup
  • One tablespoon of chia seeds.

The best part about overnight oats is you can top them with anything you like. I often top mine with Greek yogurt and fresh fruit, but nut butter, granola and chocolate chips would make for great additions too.

What Customers Are Saying About Orgain Protein Powder

Reviewers say Orgain Protein Powder has a great taste and creamy flavor that makes it easy and enjoyable to drink. Many mention that Orgain helps reduce their stomach bloating as well. One verified buyer said, “I’[ve been] taking Orgain for more than 2 years now. I feel so great! It helps get rid of my bloated stomach.” Customers also praise Orgain’s macros saying, “The macros are great and dissolve well in water without being gritty.”

On the downside, some reviewers did not like the taste of the sweeteners in the product. One said, “I don't care for the saccharine taste of it and the kind of sweeteners used in this product. If it was unsweetened or sweetened with normal sugar it would be great.” Another customer said it clumps easily when mixed with water or milk. Despite the few critical reviews, Orgain Protein Powder has 4.5/5 rating on its website and on Amazon. The great macros and taste make it an incredible option for its budget-friendly price.

Orgain vs KOS Organic Plant-Based Protein

KOS brand image

While the KOS and Orgain protein powders seem similar at first glance, the differences between their macronutrients and ingredients are worth considering when choosing which supplement is right for you. KOS Organic Plant-Based Protein has one less gram of protein and two more grams of sugar in its formula than Orgain’s protein powder. The added sugar is a result of KOS’s choice to sweeten its powder with coconut sugar rather than stevia. KOS has the upper hand when it comes to vitamins because its Organic Fruit and Veggie Blend that adds 17 vitamins and minerals to the protein powder. On the other hand, KOS’s single-protein base lacks the full amino acid profile that Orgain’s protein powders offer. As for the price, KOS is a more expensive plant-protein supplement. At $44.79 for a 2.4-pound bag, it costs nearly 20 cents more per serving than Orgain Protein Powder.

Orgain vs Vega Original Protein

Vega Original Plant-Based Protein

Vega’s Original Protein Plant-Based Protein Powder is another popular protein powder for those following a plant-based diet. While it is similar to Orgain in many ways, Vega’s protein powder has 25 grams of protein while Orgain has 21 grams. Both are high servings, but Vega’s additional four grams may make it a better option for those who want to gain muscle mass. Vega and Orgain protein powders each have zero grams of sugar. Orgain differentiates itself from Vega in its well-rounded protein blend because Vega’s protein base is exclusively pea protein. This means it will likely not have the full amino acid profile Orgain protein powders gain from their three-protein formula. When it comes to price, the two brands are comparable, but Vega is slightly cheaper at $26.99 for a two-pound container.

Orgain vs Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder

Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder

Like Orgain, Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder is Certified USDA Organic and verified non-GMO. It also has a three-protein base that provides a full profile of amino acids. However, the brands’ macronutrients and vitamin doses differentiate the two. Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder has one more gram of protein and fewer calories than Orgain. This could make Garden of Life a slightly more effective protein supplement for lean muscle gain and weight loss compared to Orgain. Additionally, Garden of Life provides servings of seven critical vitamins and minerals. However, these additions are not without cost, as Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder costs $50.99 for a one-and-a-half-pound container, compared to $28.49 for two pounds of Orgain protein powder.
