Sunderland take on Preston North End in the Championship this weekend.

Sunderland return to league duties with a trip to Preston North End on Saturday.

Last time the Black Cats headed to Deepdale, a 3-0 win saw them claim a spot in the top six on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

Tony Mowbray's side eventually fell out of the play-offs but they've since had a positive summer transfer window, signing some new and exciting young players.

It's been a poor start to the new campaign though, with defeats v Ipswich Town in the league and Crewe Alexandra in the Carabao Cup.

But returning to Championship action this weekend, Sunderland have a chance to get back to winning ways - against a sturdy Preston outfit though, it won't be easy.

And speaking to the press ahead of the game, Preston boss Ryan Lowe has had his say on Sunderland, saying:

"They've got a fantastic set of players with good quality. Tony has been there and done it, and has them playing the right way. It was tough for us against them at Deepdale last season, but we'll look to stamp our authority on the game."

Preston are another good Championship side. They too are looking to build for the future with the club having made some positive moves in the past few transfer windows.

They drew with Bristol City in their opening game of the season and they also lost in the Carabao Cup this week, being knocked out by Salford City on penalties.

So for both sides, this weekend's game is another important one, with a win able to put some wind in the sails of either side.

The game kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
