Report shares key update on Tony Mowbray's Sunderland future

Tony Mowbray's Sunderland contract was extended to 2025 following the Black Cats' 6th place finish last season, reports Chronicle Live.
Mowbray arrived at Sunderland soon after the start of last season.
Few expected much from Mowbray and indeed from Sunderland in their first season back in the second tier, but the pair exceeded everyone's expectations by achieving a top six finish.
Despite that, Mowbray's Sunderland future has been in doubt for the bulk of 2023.
There've been reports of the club eyeing up potential successors, and potentially ousting Mowbray despite his good work at the club, as Sunderland look to put a youthful emphasis on the playing and non-playing staff it seems.
But an emerging report from Chronicle Live has revealed that last season's top six finish automatically triggered an extension to Mowbray's initial two-year deal, with the 59-year-old now contracted to the club until the summer of 2025.
A relief...
Sunderland fans have really warmed to Mowbray since he arrived at the club.
For an experienced manager, he plays a very modern and attractive style of football, and his pedigree at developing younger players has been wholly evident since he took charge.
Names like Jack Clarke have really prevailed under his guidance and many expect the newest crop of Sunderland youngster to flourish under Mowbray as well.
The club may well have some names on their list of eventual successors, and they have every right to, but for the time being, Mowbray is doing a very good job at the club.
And as long Mowbray keeps this fine work going then the club has no reason to oust him from his current position.
Sunderland return to action v QPR this weekend.
