Sidelined Sunderland man could return vs Sheffield Wednesday

Sunderland take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Friday night.

Sunderland are back on the road on Friday when they head to South Yorkshire to face bottom club Sheffield Wednesday.

The Black Cats sit in 5th place of the Championship table as things stand, compared to winless Wednesday who sit in 24th and with just two points on the board.

Tony Mowbray will want a return to winning ways after Cardiff City ended a three-game winning streak for the Black Cats last time out.

And Mowbray's side could be bolstered by the return of key midfielder Pierre Ekwah who's missed the last two with a leg issue.

Sunderland Echo write that Ekwah's injury was not a serious one but that the club had to wait for it to settle, and that he could well return to action on Friday night.

A boost for the Black Cats...

Mowbray's options in the middle of the pitch are very light.

The Sunderland boss had to cope without the towering Frenchman for the last two with Alex Pritchard coming into the side, but if Ekwah is fit to start then expect him to do so.

He's a very well-liked player in the Sunderland side and someone with a lot of potential, largely discovered by Mowbray last season and in the opening stages of this season.

At the same time though, if Ekwah still isn't 100% then Mowbray might bench him or even leave him out for one more game.

Friday's game kicks off at 8pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
