Sunderland look set to lose U18s coach Adam Asghar to Southampton, reports Sunderland Echo.

Asghar is only 29 years old, but he's already making quite the name for himself in football coaching.

He was a player in Scotland but called off his playing career early to focus on coaching, having held roles at Motherwell and Dundee United in the past.

The UEFA Elite Youth A coaching licence holder joined Sunderland's coaching staff in late 2022 and he's impressed since, guiding the club's U18 side to a 2nd place finish in their respective league last time round - they finished behind Manchester City.

But now, Sunderland Echo are reporting that Championship rivals Southampton are set to poach Asghar, and hand him the reins of the U21s side.

A blow for the Black Cats...

Asghar is a real asset to Sunderland. He's done a lot of good work with the club's U18s side since arriving, and losing him to another Championship club is an obvious blow.

He's no doubt helped play a part in a lot of young players' careers but for Asghar, landing the U21s job at Southampton looks like a real step up.

As for the Black Cats, they'll no doubt have to replace him, and if they can't replace him with someone as good then it could really impact upon the current U18s players' development.

It's certainly a tough one for the club to take, but they'll have to move on.

Tony Mowbray's first-team return to action v Rotherham United this weekend, in what looks like a real must-win for the Black Cats who've started slowly.
