Sunderland youngster Jewison Bennette is unlikely to leave on loan this summer, says Tony Mowbray, with the Costa Rican currently sidelined with a back injury.

Reports this week have claimed that Bennette, 19, could leave Sunderland on loan this summer after a delayed start to life in England.

The young Costa Rican international left his homeland to sign for Sunderland ahead of last season, but a combination of injury and not being selected limited the winger to just 15 Championship appearances last time round.

And speaking to Sunderland Echo, Mowbray revealed that Bennette is currently nursing a back injury which has ruled him out of this weekend's game at Coventry City, whilst also playing down a potential loan exit.

Mowbray said:

"Jewison is injured at the moment, so he won't be involved this weekend. I don't think it's going to be this window for Jewison. I think he needs bedding into the club, keep learning the language and understanding the demands of the club. And then hopefully he can make more of a breakthrough, because he is undoubtedly talented."

Mowbray also highlighted a language barrier for Bennette which has made settling in at Sunderland slightly more difficult for the player.

Mowbray then added:

"I don't see him going anywhere over the next week other than working on getting himself back fit and getting himself back in contention for selection."

Bennette showed glimpses of a very talented player last season.

And he's not had much luck on the injury front so far, with this apparent language barrier another tough thing for such a young player to overcome.

But it looks like Mowbray has a plan for him and in the Sunderland boss, Bennette is in good hands.

How long Bennette might be out for remains to be seen, but hopefully we'll see him back in action sooner rather than later.

Sunderland v Coventry City kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.
