Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has suggested that the club could look to bolster their midfield department in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Sunderland have made a lot of impressive signings this summer. But still, Mowbray seems to be lacking in a few areas of the pitch.

Up front is the obvious one with Luis Hemir the only fit no.9 currently available, and now it seems like Mowbray is a bit light in midfield.

Jay Matete is sidelined and potentially out until Christmas, as per Mowbray, who had this to say after the defeat v Preston North End on Saturday:

"The midfield area is quite light if you think that there's Dan Neil, Pierre Ekwah, and then Jobe - after that you are into Chris Rigg, who is a 16-year-old boy. It's an area that maybe we should be looking at.

"I think the reality is that we have to get the front end of the pitch sorted out first but we are mindful that we are a bit light in there.

"If Dan or Pierre were to pick up an injury, it suddenly starts to look really thin in that area of the pitch."

Sunderland have heavily bolstered their defence this summer, adding the physicality and height that they needed to.

They've signed a new striker in Eliezer Mayenda but he's currently injured, and now it looks like they need to turn their attention to the midfield.

They have a few names injured in Corry Evans, Matete, and Elliot Embleton, and it's surprising that Sunderland haven't already addressed this position already.

Expect the Black Cats to look at signing a midfielder or two in the coming weeks, but like Mowbray says, strikers remains the key priority - as it has done for the best part of 2023.
