Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray hopes that Ross Stewart eventually signs a contract renewal the club, ahead of his contract expiry at the end of this season.

Stewart has been a talking point for Sunderland since their return to the Championship last year.

The Scot only played 13 times in the Championship, scoring 10 goals, but his future has been the main taking point with his contract soon to be out and with rival clubs having been linked.

Stewart is expected to return to action towards the end of next month after suffering an Achilles injury at the start of the year, and giving a latest verdict on the 27-year-old, Mowbray told The Northern Echo:

"I'm hoping Ross Stewart gets fit and, whether he signs a contract or doesn't sign a contract, he scores 20 goals between whenever he is fit and the end of the season.

"I still believe, somewhere along the line, the supporters have still got a huge part to play with Ross Stewart.

"OK, he's not signed a deal, but if he is scoring goals, enjoying his football, the crowd are singing his name, he's their hero, why wouldn't you sign for a club with 46,000 supporters all singing your name? Ross just wants to be where he is loved and cared for, and there isn't a bigger, better, football club in this league than this one."

The first thing for Stewart is to get back on the pitch, get back scoring, and avoid another injury.

He's missed so much football over the past year and his return will be a very welcome one for Sunderland, who've missed his presence in attack.

And if he does return to the same form he was in before then he'll have no problem getting back to scoring ways, which could hopefully see him extend his stay at the club like Mowbray suggests.

The Black Cats return to action v Southampton this weekend.
