Tony Mowbray is set to remain as Sunderland boss going into next season, reports Daily Mail.

Mowbray arrived at Sunderland in August last year, replacing Alex Neil who jumped ship for Stoke City.

It looked like a steady appointment with the aim being to steer Sunderland towards a comfortable mid-table finish upon their return to the Championship.

But Mowbray and his players went much further than that. They finished the 2022/23 campaign in 6th place of the table, booking themselves a place in the Championship play-offs in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season.

The Black Cats would eventually lose to Luton Town over the course of two legs, but they gave a thorough account of themselves.

Since, there's been speculation regarding Mowbray's future at the club. There had been reports of Sunderland potentially weighing up a managerial change even before the play-offs, and after his side's defeat v Luton Town earlier this week, Mowbray painted an unclear picture about his future at the club.

He said:

"Do I want to be here next season? I do, yes.

"But let's wait and see how it goes, and what the summer brings. I don't know what will happen next. I'll just get on with it. I've got a contract so I'll just keep going."

And it was also reported by talkSPORT that Mowbray was fighting to keep his job at the Stadium of Light.

But Daily Mail revealed earlier this morning that the 59-year-old is set to stay with the club going into next season, and that planning for the 2023/24 season under Mowbray is already underway.

For Sunderland, nothing is broken, so they don't necessarily need to change anything. Mowbray might not be the youthful, flashy manager that they'd like in the long-term, but he's certainly providing and sacking him after this season would've been criminal.
