Sunderland beat Luton Town 2-1 in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-finals yesterday.

Goals from Amad Diallo and Trai Hume sealed the 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light, handing the Black Cats the advantage going into the second leg at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night.

Diallo's goal was something special, but Hume's goal was also a well-taken one. The 21-year-old met the end of a Jack Clarke cross and headed the ball into the bottom corner of the net for only his second ever Sunderland goal.

The Northern Ireland international has featured 29 times in league fixtures this season, having stepped in at centre-back of late with injuries having piled up in the Sunderland defensive department.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Hume was asked if there's a level of belief in the Sunderland team after they had to come from behind to beat Luton.

He said:

"Yeah definitely. There's no reason why we wouldn't believe. Obviously, we weren't supposed to be here [the play-offs], but we're here and obviously we believe in ourselves. We don't fear anyone really."

Every single Sunderland player has played their part this season. And although Hume has been used as more of a back-up player at times, he's since been given a chance to come into the starting XI and he's really impressed.

Mowbray seems to have unearthed a really competent centre-back who only looks to be gaining confidence with every performance, and at 21 years old, there's still plenty to come from Hume.

Sunderland have all the wind in their sails right now, but they still have a trip to Kenilworth Road coming up and it'll need another massive performance from the Black Cats.

The game kicks off at 8pm on Tuesday night and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
