Sunderland man Patrick Roberts has interest from the Championship, says journalist Darren Witcoop, with Southampton among the teams interested.

Roberts, 26, remains out of contract at Sunderland at the end of this season.

Sunderland Nation previously revealed that the club have offered new terms to the former Manchester City man, but it appears that he's yet to pen his future to the club.

Witcoop tweeted yesterday that Southampton remain keen on Roberts after apparently seeing a £4.5million bid knocked back on deadline day, at the same time they signed Ross Stewart from Sunderland.

Witcoop also added that Southampton aren't the only side interested, with other clubs in the second tier keeping an eye on his Sunderland situation.

Lasts season, Roberts scored five and assisted seven more in the Championship, making 44 total league appearances across the campaign.

This time round, Roberts has featured seven times in the Championship but he's yet to record a goal contribution, having made way for Abdoullah Ba last month.

What next for Roberts?

Roberts remains a key layer despite starting some game son the bench last month.

Mowbray is a huge admirer of the attacker and he'll no doubt play an important role in this season's promotion push.

And with a promotion push very much on the cards, expect Sunderland to be keen on retaining the likes of Roberts come January.

But then again, if he doesn't pen a new deal then it might make financial sense to cash in; as the Black Cats did with Ross Stewart.

Sunderland return to action vs Watford on Wednesday.
