BYU Flips Arizona Commit Sefo Akuila on Signing Day

On Wednesday, BYU pulled off the signing day flip of athlete Sefo Akuila. Akuila, a former Arizona commit, took an official visit to BYU back in December. The visit made some level of impact on his college decision - he declined to sign with Arizona during the early signing period even before Jedd Fisch left for Washington. Fisch's departure only helped BYU pull off the flip. BYU's coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for continuing to pursue Akuila while he was committed to Arizona. Akuila is a native of Oakland, California.

Akuila had a connection to BYU. He is the high school teammate of Naki Tuakoi, a BYU signee. Akuila played both quarterback and linebacker in high school. He already has a college-ready frame at 6'3 and 230 pounds. He could play a variety of positions at the next level. He could end up at linebacker, defensive end, tight end, or even running back. Regardless, he has the frame to become a good player at the Power Four level. BYU announced him as a linebacker.

BYU worked to flip a few players that were committed to other schools during the early signing period. They pulled off the flip of former Texas Tech DL commit Danny Saili. Saili flipped his commitment to BYU after taking an official visit. BYU also tried to flip Oklahoma State commit Nuku Mafi. The Cougars came close but Mafi ended up signing with the Cowboys. Akuila is the second successful flip of the recruiting cycle.
